Southern
Region Triangular 25th April 2010
Well done all that took part from swindon.
Swindon's U14 foil team, for coming 1st in the U14 Junior Team
Final that was also fought on the day of the
Triangular.
Wiltshire Adults came 2nd in
Epee, and 3rd in Foil.
Which isn't as bad as it
seems as there was an amendment to the format this year: the Hants U18
Foil team (the only
U18 team that actually competed) joined the Senior event: it was 4 teams
not 3. (So, arguably, we came 2nd in Foil, too...)
Well done to:
The Epeeists: Gerry Simpson, Akos Barkoczy, Heather Newman, Natalie
Thomas (all from Wessex Blades) and Richard Ongaro, from Swindon/RMCS
Shrivenham.
The Foilists: Austin Rose, Mike Bradbury, Mark Vice, Chris Reynolds
(allfrom Swindon),
and Laura borrowed from
Reading University.
Well done, too (and many thanks) to Mike Bradbury for getting the teams
together.
Despite the County Training Days and Alan's scheme to develop a County
fencing squad, it remained a difficult task; we're still a long way from
having a standing pool of County fencers who can be called upon for
these events. Every one is encouraged to join the training days.

Swindon vs. RAL 2009
So there we were facing our enemy across the piste, eyeing each other
warily. It was us or them. For many on both sides it would be their
first competition. This is how the first Swindon vs. Rutherford Appleton
Laboratories (RAL) fencing competition began. As was soon apparent to
both sides it would become a friendly and well mannered encounter with
each side fielding two mixed teams of three foilists, an A team and a B
team. This designation was more to do with identification than any
difference in ability.
It has been decided that the completion would be fought in a relay style
with the individual fencers points building a cumulative total and
therefore the first team to reach 45 points would be declared the
winner. This way it gave everyone plenty of chance to prove themselves.
I was fencing for the Swindon A team, our first match started well
against the RAL A team with some good natured banter, their team put up
some good opposition with some good moves from both sides. Swindon A was
victorious .
Looking across to the other Piste, where Swindon B were putting up
resistance to a strong RAL B team. Unfortunately for them their
resistance was ineffective, with RAL B winning .
After a brief pause with some more subtle investigation into the
opposition from both sides, “how long have you been fencing?”, “how
often do you fence?”, and other similar lines of questioning it was time
to get physical again.
The RAL teams had swapped Pistes to face the other Swindon teams. With
the score one a piece there was still all to play for. With one of the
Swindon B team having to retire early it left them on the back foot with
a large deficit, but true to form they came back with pride to take the
fight to RAL. Back on the Swindon A piste we were learning why the B
team had faired badly against the RAL B team. They were putting up a
strong fight with some hard fencing. We were going to have to start
using tactics, the clock, and stamina to beat them as they were coming
back well. With the Clock running out on the match the final score
showed a win to Swindon A and a decisive win to the RAL A team across
the hall .
Considering that this was the first competition for many of the fencers
on both sides and the majority of us all fencing for less than two years
the match proved to be a good run out for all. An enjoyable evening
all-round and some good natured rivalry to carry forward to the next
meeting of blades.
